Sleep: What Happens While You Rest?
Sometimes one of the best things we can do for our health is turn out the lights and go to sleep.
We spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping, but those hours are anything but wasted. While we sleep, our bodies and brains are remarkably busy. Sleep supports physical restoration, immune function, metabolism, memory, learning, emotional regulation, and even some important housekeeping in the brain.
Sleep isn't simply the absence of being awake. Sleep is an active part of keeping us well.
What Happens After You Close Your Eyes?
A night's sleep isn't one long period of unconsciousness. Instead, we repeatedly travel through different stages of sleep:
Stage 1 – N1: This is the transition from being awake to being asleep. Our muscles begin

to relax, breathing slows, and we start to drift off.
Stage 2 – N2: We enter a more established sleep. Heart rate slows, body temperature decreases, and we become less responsive to our surroundings.
Stage 3 – N3: This is our deepest stage of non-REM sleep, sometimes called slow wave sleep. It is particularly important for physical restoration and can be the hardest stage from which to awaken.
Stage 4- REM Sleep: REM stands for rapid eye movement. Brain activity increases, vivid dreaming commonly occurs, and REM sleep plays an important role in learning, memory, and emotional processing.
Together, these stages form a sleep cycle, generally lasting about 90–120 minutes. Most adults move through approximately four to six cycles during a full night's sleep. Interestingly, the cycles aren't identical. We tend to get more deep sleep earlier in the night, while REM periods become longer toward morning. So when we continually shorten our nights, we aren't simply losing an hour or two in bed. We may also be cutting short the opportunity for our brains and bodies to repeatedly move through these important stages.
Your Body Has a Clock — Have you ever wondered why you naturally become sleepy at certain times and more alert at others?
Part of the answer is your circadian rhythm—the body's approximately 24-hour internal clock. Light and darkness are powerful signals for that clock. As morning approaches, cortisol normally begins to rise, helping prepare us for wakefulness and activity. As evening arrives and light decreases, the brain's pineal gland produces melatonin, helping signal that biological nighttime has arrived.
For most of human history, sunrise and sunset helped keep this rhythm synchronized with the natural world. Then we invented the lightbulb. Today, we can extend "daytime" long after sunset. Lights in our homes, televisions, phones, tablets, and computers expose our eyes to light when our biology may be expecting darkness. Evening light—particularly blue enriched light—can delay or suppress melatonin and influence our internal clock. We figured out how to keep the lights on. Our biology didn't necessarily get the memo.
Your Brain's Nighttime Dishwasher
One of the most fascinating areas of sleep research involves something called the glymphatic system. Think about your kitchen after a big family dinner. During the meal, dishes, glasses, pots, and pans pile up. Eventually, somebody needs to clean the kitchen and run the dishwasher. Our brains also produce metabolic waste while they're busy working. Research suggests that the brain's glymphatic waste-clearance activity is particularly active during sleep.
So while you're sleeping, your brain isn't simply "turned off.” The cleanup crew is working. Scientists are still learning exactly how this process works and what it means for long-term human health, so it would be an oversimplification to say that sleep simply "washes toxins out of the brain.” But it does reinforce an important point: The brain needs sleep, too.
Sleep Is Rest for the Mind - Have you ever noticed that problems seem bigger when you're exhausted?
A minor frustration becomes overwhelming. We're more impatient. More emotional. More likely to worry. Something we could normally handle can suddenly feel enormous. Sleep doesn't just affect our physical health. It plays an important role in our mental and emotional well-being.
Adequate sleep supports the brain's ability to regulate emotions and respond to stress. A good night's sleep won't make life's problems disappear, but it can help give us greater capacity to deal with them. Think of it as recharging your emotional battery. When that battery is charged, the traffic jam, difficult conversation, unexpected bill, or stressful workday may still bother us—but we have more capacity to cope. When we're running on empty, even small stresses can feel enormous.
Sleep doesn't eliminate stress. It helps support our resilience to it. Unfortunately, sleep and anxiety can also feed one another. Anxiety can make it harder to sleep, while inadequate sleep can leave us feeling more emotionally reactive and anxious the next day. Sometimes the tired brain simply has a harder time putting things into perspective.
Your Brain Works Hard All Day
The human brain is an extraordinarily energy-demanding organ. Although it represents only about 2% of an adult's body weight, it accounts for roughly 20% of the body's resting energy use. All day long, our brains are processing information, making decisions, controlling movement, interpreting our senses, forming memories, regulating emotions, and coordinating countless bodily functions. That's quite a workload. And yet, when life gets busy, sleep is often the first thing we're willing to sacrifice.
Burning the Candle at Both Ends
One more project.
One more email.
One more episode.
A few more minutes scrolling on the phone.
We stay up later—but the alarm still goes off at the same time the next morning.
We call it burning the candle at both ends. Eventually, there isn't much candle left. Insufficient sleep can affect attention, judgment, reaction time, memory, mood, emotional regulation, and physical performance. Severe sleep deprivation can profoundly affect how we think and function. Sleep deprivation has even historically been used in coercive interrogation—a striking reminder of how fundamental sleep is to normal human functioning.
We wouldn't intentionally deprive ourselves of food or water night after night and expect to perform at our best. Why should sleep be different?
Sleep isn't laziness.
It isn't wasted time.
Sleep shouldn’t be something we continually sacrifice to do one more thing.
Our bodies were designed with rhythms of activity and rest. So perhaps this month's Wellness Prescription is simply an invitation to think differently about sleep. Instead of asking: “How little sleep can I get away with?” Maybe the better question is: “Am I giving my body and brain the rest they need to function well?”
And that leads to even more questions.
How much sleep do we actually need?
Can we catch up on lost sleep?
Why do some people wake up at 2 or 3 in the morning?
Does everyone need eight hours?
What about melatonin, magnesium, caffeine, alcohol, naps, snoring, menopause, screens, and sleep medications?
